The Tasmanian parliament has become the first in Australia to pass a motion supporting gay marriage.

The motion, introduced by the Greens, calls on the federal government to amend the Marriage Act to allow for same sex marriage.

Premier Lara Giddings has voiced her support for gay marriage and all 10 Labor members voted in favour of the motion on Wednesday afternoon.

The state’s Liberal opposition voted against the motion.

Ms Giddings has said she regards amendments to the Marriage Act strictly in the federal government’s jurisdiction.
